Laika CEO and Wildwood director Travis Knight has described artificial intelligence as antithetical to the studio's core identity. Knight made these remarks in a recent appearance, joining other filmmakers in criticizing the use of generative AI in production. Wildwood represents the most ambitious project from the stop-motion studio, which is best known for titles such as Coraline and ParaNorman. The fantasy adventure required five years to complete. The production utilized more than 230 puppets, with the main character Prue alone requiring 36 distinct versions. A team of 49 animators brought these figures to life, while more than 1,000 artists contributed to the film in various capacities. This labor-intensive process stands in contrast to the rapid output associated with generative AI tools. Knight's comments highlight the tension between traditional craftsmanship and emerging digital technologies.
