The Trump administration is moving forward with a plan to permit compounding pharmacies to manufacture specific peptides, a category of injections that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved as safe or effective. The Associated Press reports that these compounds have gained popularity among wellness influencers, including U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The administration's proposal would allow these largely unregulated products to be produced by compounding facilities, despite the lack of federal clearance for their safety or efficacy. Most of the available data on these peptides derives from animal studies, according to the report. In related pharmaceutical developments, Bloomberg Law states that China is seeking to tighten controls on biotechnology exports. Beijing is proposing to add five biomedical technologies to its export-control list, a move announced in a statement from the Ministry of Commerce. The draft proposal specifically targets two types of advanced medical technology platforms designed to treat diseases at a genetic level. However, the proposed rules clarify that the new restrictions will not apply to licensing agreements, partnerships, or contract research services involving these technologies. This distinction aims to maintain the flow of international business while regulating direct exports.
