The Oklahoma City Thunder will start the new year without two key contributors after Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both suffered severe injuries that require surgery. General Manager Sam Presti confirmed on Monday that Williams will undergo an operation to repair a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula, while Wallace is scheduled for surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Williams sustained his injury during the fourth quarter of the Thunder's game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. He elevated near the basket with Clippers defenders around him to attempt a shot but landed awkwardly, falling on his left foot and ankle. The position of his foot after the fall indicated the severity of the trauma, and Williams was visibly stunned as he held his head in disbelief. Trainers formed a circle around him to assess the situation before placing him on a stretcher. As he was wheeled off the court, the Thunder crowd chanted his name, and Williams acknowledged their support with a thumbs-up.
Wallace's injury occurred earlier in the contest. The guard suffered a shoulder issue in the first quarter, prompting Presti to announce that he too would require surgical intervention. The dual loss creates a significant challenge for Oklahoma City, which had hoped for Williams to return to All-Star form after an injury-plagued previous season. Last year, Williams missed 49 regular-season games and much of the postseason due to a right wrist injury that required surgery, along with hamstring ailments in both legs.
Wallace, who signed a five-year contract extension worth $139 million before the current season began, stepped into the starting lineup this year. The early-season injury disrupts his trajectory after just a few games. With both players out, the Thunder will rely on their depth, which includes one of the NBA's best benches. Jared McCain and Alex Caruso, typically reserve players with key roles, are likely to be moved into the starting five for the remainder of the season. The team's next opportunity to test this new configuration is Monday night against the Phoenix Suns.
