The Center for Addiction Science, Policy and Research and the Allegheny County Department of Human Services will launch a clinical trial in early 2027 to test whether a GLP-1 drug can help people with addiction and reduce their risk of returning to the criminal justice system. The study will enroll up to 1,200 adults with alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, or both who are at high risk of criminal-justice involvement. Participants will be randomly assigned to take Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy or a control, according to a press release issued by the organizers. The trial aims to measure effects on recidivism as well as employment, health, and housing outcomes. Separately, Liquidia and United Therapeutics reached a settlement agreement that resolves their patent litigation over Liquidia’s treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension. STAT also reported that its infectious disease correspondent, Helen Branswell, has died.
