The Medicines Patent Pool has signed sub-licensing agreements with 11 manufacturers to produce generic versions of Roche's influenza treatment, Xofluza. The moves are designed to prepare for pandemic scenarios by expanding access to the medication in low- and middle-income countries.
Under the agreements, the manufacturers are authorized to develop, manufacture, and supply Xofluza in 129 countries. This geographic scope covers nearly all low- and middle-income nations. The deals also grant the companies access to technical data and reference products required for bioequivalence studies. These resources are intended to support regulatory approval processes in the designated markets.
The initiative represents a continued effort to widen access to essential medications in poorer regions. Such efforts often require the pharmaceutical industry to balance financial priorities with the goal of ensuring medicines can be affordably obtained by the largest number of patients possible.
