Atlanta Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels recovered a fumble in the final minute to secure a victory over the San Francisco 49ers, ending the visitors' undefeated season. The play came one week after Daniels was stretchered off the field following a collision that raised concerns about his neck.
The Falcons, who were not favored to win against a San Francisco team that had started the season undefeated, led by nine points late in the fourth quarter. With less than one minute remaining, San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy threw a pass to tight end George Kittle. Kittle secured the ball but was tripped by Falcons safety Jessie Bates III. As Kittle attempted to regain his footing, he dropped the football. Daniels dived onto the loose ball, securing the turnover that sealed the win for Atlanta.
The result moved the Falcons to a 3-5 record on the season and gave the 49ers their first loss. Daniels finished the game with a career-high 11 tackles, nine of which were solo efforts. He also recorded an interception when he jumped on a Purdy pass in the middle of the field, tipped it, and caught it. Although Daniels attempted to return the interception for a touchdown, he was pushed out of bounds before reaching the end zone. The Falcons forced four turnovers from the 49ers during the game.
The win was particularly significant given Daniels' injury in the previous week's game against the Chicago Bears. During that matchup, Daniels delivered a hit on tight end Colston Loveland, colliding with his knee in a way that caused his neck to snap back. Play stopped for approximately 10 minutes while trainers assessed him. The Falcons stated that Daniels was conscious and moving his extremities when he was placed on a stretcher as a precaution.
Days after the incident, Daniels was cleared to participate in practice, allowing him to suit up against San Francisco. Speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Daniels acknowledged the severity of his previous injury. "I scared a lot of people. It was a scary play," he said. "I'm blessed to come out how I did..."
The Falcons will next face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an NFC South matchup. The Buccaneers recently improved their record with a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers.
