New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh indicated on Wednesday that the team may give J.J. McCarthy a larger role in its offense, following a game where the 23-year-old played five snaps. The Giants tied the Washington Commanders 27-27 on Sunday, and Harbaugh suggested that McCarthy's involvement could increase as the team searches for ways to improve its performance. Harbaugh stated that what fans saw of McCarthy in the game was likely not the full extent of his current usage. "What you saw is probably not all we have for him right now," Harbaugh said at a Wednesday press conference, adding that whether McCarthy remains on the field will depend on game circumstances. The coach emphasized the benefit of using all available players, noting that the team would be negligent if it did not explore every opportunity to help win games. During the matchup with Washington, McCarthy executed a screen pass to Malik Nabers, though the play was nullified by a penalty. Three of McCarthy's other plays utilized his ability to run to generate movement in the Giants' struggling rushing attack. The running game had performed well during the team's Week 1 victory over the Dallas Cowboys when Jaxson Dart was in the lineup, but it has faltered since Dart suffered an injury. With Dart sidelined, Daniel Jones has taken over as the starting quarterback and holds a 2-0-1 record. In four games, including three starts in relief of Dart, Jones has completed 57.6% of his passes for 805 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. Despite these statistics, Jones has appeared increasingly comfortable within the Giants' offense each week. When the Giants face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, McCarthy is expected to substitute for Jones for some snaps. Harbaugh described McCarthy's presence as a change of pace that could assist the team. The coaching staff continues to evaluate how best to utilize its roster to maximize offensive output.
