An investigational combination therapy from Eli Lilly produced significant weight loss in a mid-stage study, though high rates of participants stopping the treatment may raise questions about its tolerability. The company tested pairings of its GLP-1 drug Zepbound with eloralintide, an amylin-targeting candidate, in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.
After 48 weeks, those who continued the highest dose of the dual therapy shed 23.3% of their body weight, per data shared Wednesday at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting. This outcome surpassed the 14.8% loss recorded for Zepbound alone and the 11.1% seen with the top dose of eloralintide alone. The findings stand out given that individuals with diabetes typically experience less weight reduction from such medications compared to those without the condition.
