A deliberate arm-grab with less than 10 seconds left in the first half produced the sharpest moment yet in the growing on-court rivalry between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark on Thursday night. A "foul to give" is when a team can commit one intentional foul before crossing the threshold that sends the opponent to the free-throw line; the Dallas Wings had that margin available and used it. Clark responded by firing the ball hard down the court near Bueckers before both teams headed to the locker room, and Dallas closed out a 91-85 victory over the Indiana Fever.

The sequence started with Clark in possession and Bueckers guarding her. Bueckers reached in and wrapped Clark's left arm, trying to stop the possession before the second quarter expired. Clark appeared frustrated by the contact. After Bueckers continued pressing for the call, Clark sent the ball hard toward the other end of the floor, the ball sailing close to Bueckers' head. The two star guards exchanged words before heading to the locker room. Television microphones did not clearly capture what was said.

Bueckers was called for a common foul on the play. A common foul is the standard infraction for illegal contact; it sends the opposing team to the free-throw line only after the fouling team has exceeded the period's foul limit. The tension from that exchange appeared to carry into the second half. In the third quarter, officials called a separate foul on Clark; Bueckers disputed the ruling with an official and was assessed a technical foul.

The stat lines

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 37 points. Clark finished with nine assists, the best mark on her team. For Dallas, Arike Ogunbowale posted 32 points, and Bueckers added eight assists.

The two clubs played just one week earlier. Clark and Bueckers each scored 29 points in that game, though Indiana won 98-87. After that contest, Clark said Bueckers is an incredible player, smooth with the ball and difficult for defenses to contain. She described Bueckers as a tremendous player who does not force plays and consistently locates open teammates.

Bueckers received her technical foul on Thursday, one game after Clark offered that assessment during a postgame media session.
