Author: Scott Stump | TODAY

The second that dog shelter owner Rochelle Steffen first laid eyes on a tiny "unicorn" puppy that has a tail growing out of his face, she had two thoughts. "I looked at him, and I was like, 'This is the most ridiculously adorable puppy I've ever seen,'' Steffen told TODAY. "Then my million-dollar question was, 'Did the tail wag?''' Steffen, 43, the owner of Mac's Mission in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, immediately named the dog Narwhal after the type of whale that lives in Arctic waters and has a protruding tusk.

Woman in ‘Carrie’ Costume Totals Car, Terrifies First Responders

Created: Thu, Oct 31 2019 05:26:14 PM

Author:

A bloodied "Carrie" costume had first responders thinking a woman who totaled her car on an Ohio interstate was in far worse shape than she was. Sidney Wolfe, 20, was at a haunted house over the weekend dressed as Stephen King's "Carrie," with fake blood covering her face and a white prom dress, an outfit she wore to promote three Halloween productions at a Kentucky theater. She was driving home at about 1:45 a.m. when she hit a deer in South Point, Ohio. "It was so fast and instant. I had no time to react," Wolfe told NBC News on Thursday. "The deer was midair when it flew into my car. I was going 55 mph on the interstate." She said she warned a 911 dispatcher that when police and medics arrived, she would look more mangled than she actually was. "I said to the responder that I am in full Halloween makeup and don't want them to be frightened," she said. But the memo wasn't relayed. Wolfe wrote in a now-viral tweet that "everyone who was a first responder thought I was dead," adding an apology in all caps.Get more at Read More

Created: Mon, Oct 28 2019 09:43:13 AM

Author:

A Michigan woman said that a device launched by Samsung into space last week crash-landed on her rural property in Michigan on Saturday. The "Space Selfie" device, which the company said aimed to capture images “using a unique view of planet earth as the backdrop,” was found by Nancy Mumby-Welke and her husband on Saturday morning after they heard a loud crash outside their home in Gratiot County. As the couple investigated, she told NBC News, “We realized it had fallen from the sky. It looked like a satellite.” Samsung confirmed in a statement that the device “came back down to earth,” though the company described its descent as an “early soft landing in a selected rural area” that was “planned” because of weather conditions in the United States.Get more at Read More

This ‘Whiplash’ Planet Is Unlike Anything Astronomers Have Ever Seen

Created: Sun, Sep 01 2019 11:20:50 PM

Author:

Astronomers have discovered a giant planet whose extreme orbit makes it unlike anything they’ve ever seen, NBC News reports. Dubbed HR 5183 b, the exoplanet is at least three times as massive as Jupiter, and it takes a long, looping path around a star that lies about 100 light-years away in the constellation Virgo. If the exoplanet were in our own solar system — in which Earth and the other planets move around the sun in nearly circular orbits — its extremely elliptical orbit would take it from beyond Neptune to within the orbit of Jupiter. The discovery shows that "our universe is full of lots of weird solar systems totally unlike our own," Sarah Blunt, a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and one of the scientists behind the discovery, said in an email. "It seems like every time we think we've found the weirdest solar system, something else totally strange is discovered."Get more at Read More

Propelled by a power pack full of kerosene, Zapata set off from Sangatte in France's Pas de Calais region and landed in St. Margaret's Bay, beyond the white cliffs of Dover, in southeast England. He stopped only once, on the British side, to refuel his futuristic invention from a boat in the choppy waters.

Author:

More than two million people have RSVP'd to a Facebook event, titled “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,” threatening to storm the top-secret base in Nevada, NBC News reported. Tourism drawn by talk of extraterrestrial activities has been a part of the economy for decades in the small towns that dot the valleys near Area 51. The boom began around 1989, when Bob Lazar, a self-described engineer, claimed to a Las Vegas television station that he worked on extraterrestrial aircraft that were housed at Area 51. Since then, business owners and residents have welcomed tourists hoping to get a peek at the military facility or spot a UFO in the sky. If the event brings the masses it’s promised, many in the area are excited for the potential extra business. "It's a frenzy," said Connie West, who co-owns a motel, bar and restaurant called Little A’Le’Inn with her mother in Rachel, a tiny town about 50 miles from Alamo.Get more at Read More

Two little blue penguins just couldn't stay away from a New Zealand sushi store, returning to nest there even after police had captured them and escorted them back to the ocean. Wellington police described them as "waddling vagrants," while the store's co-owner joked he had no idea that word of his tasty raw fish had reached as far as the subaquatic community. But Jack Mace, an operations manager for the Department of Conservation, said the birds would have simply thought they had found a snug burrow underneath the store and wouldn't have taken note of what was being sold above them.

Divers Swim, Take Pictures With Oversized Jellyfish

Created: Mon, Jul 15 2019 07:26:43 PM

Author: Brendan Brightman

Instead of swimming away from the barrel jellyfish that is larger than some shuman and can sting you, underwater cinematographer Dan Abbot swam toward it, capturing this stunning photo: Along with wildlife biologist and presenter Lizzie Daly, the under the sea daredevils swam with the jellyfish for about an hour, they told VICE News’ Motherboard. The beast just “appeared out of the murky water” and was bigger than any other barrel jellyfish the two had ever seen. Also known as the dustbin-lid jellyfish, the barrel jellyfish is the biggest jellyfish found off the coast of the United Kingdom. They can weigh up to 77 pounds and typically measure around three feet across, according to The Wildlife Trusts. Encountering a barrel jellyfish like this is rare for humans. The only time most humans ever see one is when they wash up on the shore of a beach. And almost no one would want to swim with them, their 8-frilly tentacles, which are covered in many tiny mouths, can get you with a not-so-dangerous sting.

Cabinet of Curiosities: 15,000 Ink Samples at Secret Service

Created: Mon, Jul 08 2019 06:36:17 AM

Author: Colleen Long

In a cabinet inside a modest laboratory in downtown Washington are rows and rows of ink samples in plastic squeeze bottles and small glass jars. To the untrained eye, it's just a bunch of blackish liquid with strange names like "moldy sponge" or "green grass." But to the U.S. Secret Service agents who use the samples, they are the clues that could save the president from an assassination attempt. Or stops a counterfeit ring. Or identify the D.C. sniper. The ink library at the lab contains more than 15,000 samples of pen, marker and printer inks dating back to the 1920s. The collection is the result of one man, Antonio Cantu, a renowned investigator and former chief chemist at the Secret Service who started picking up samples in the 1960s. Cantu died unexpectedly last year, and the Secret Service recently dedicated the lab in his honor.
